For the past year the daunting task on the top of my “this is unfinished” list, was to immerse myself in social media. While not shy in face-to-face social encounters, online, I was always and consistently a lurker. An introvert on the Meyer-Briggs scale and with a natal astrological chart that speaks to reserve and with familial conditioning that enforced quietude, I felt stuck, and I must admit, like I was missing something with my aversion to social networking.  I did have a facebook account, however, I rarely used it and missed at least one party invitation because I didn’t use it.

The dear people who help me with my blog kept telling me that if I wanted traffic to pick-up, I needed to get more active with social networking. My first inclination was to use Twitter, as at one earlier personal reinvention phase, I identified as a “poetic journalist.”  I felt that the brevity of tweets would be more my style.  Six tweets in as many months did not really do the trick for immersing me in social networking. Building traffic to my blog was one goal, an equally important goal was  increasing my connection with like-minded, good-hearted community. Social media is a prime way this connection happens now.

I am someone, maybe like you, who makes “Wish Lists” on important dates, like Solstices and Equinoxes and Cross-Quarter days and New Moons.  Over the course of this past year, these wish lists reinforced my yearning to be connected to a larger community through social networking.  One day last week, out of the blue and with perfect timing, it happened.  I woke up ready to go social network.  Twitter was, again, my first conscious choice, however, my subconscious seemed to have other plans, as I found myself logged into facebook.  Up to that point, my facebook account had a picture of a beach I love, one of the North Shore of Lake Superior beaches just outside of  Duluth, Minnesota.  In this new connection with social networking, I wanted to show my face, so started this connection by uploading a photo of me.

Within one minute of that upload I received a “like” and a comment from a beloved colleague in my local community, someone I had not seen in many months. This experience was synchronistic and it felt like magic! I was safe in this strange new world. I was intrigued and eager to join in, to play. In this last week on Facebook, I have made many discoveries of things I might not have encountered otherwise.  I am also communicating with people I love who live at a distance.  Email didn’t seem to work and while our conversations are not private on facebook, we are connecting about important things and I feel part of the connection. I am linking up with friends of friends and maybe you know how great that feels. To someone who has sat on the sidelines, waiting, this is like a whole new world: alive, animate, connected!

I am still learning my way around facebook and I  go slow, inching my way further in day by day.  I have found my voice.  I haven’t given up on twitter, either and I am currently looking at Pinterest for the beauty of it, and something called livejournal to see if that is a match for me.

What we want in life takes some brewing; it takes time to clarify the wish, make it and then nurture it as we are guided to do. Then, all of a sudden, it happens. That one morning I hopped out of bed knowing my destiny that day was to activate my social networking.  I did it and the results are amazing.  I am reminded of a quote, hanging on my office door, the author is “anonymous” to me, so if you know who wrote this, please let me know.  Here is is

No matter what it is, if you really want it, and if you get out of the way

it will happen.  It must be. It is Law. It can be no other way.

It is the way this Universe is established. If you want it

and you relax, it will happen.
